Student Lead Research
Each summer, a highly qualified and determined student from Washington & Jefferson College is selected to become the Summer Research Intern at Pain Diagnostics and Interventional Care. Under the mentorship of Dr. Provenzano, these students have had the opportunity to learn the process of scientific writing, present at national medical conferences, and make a difference in the lives of chronic pain patients. Each summer intern has been able to walk away from the experience with at least one publication and the first-hand experience of pain management practice both in the clinical setting and in the operating room. Many of Dr. Provenzano’s research interns have proceeded on to medical school and continued to nurture their own interest in medical and basic science research.

We have been fortunate at PDIC to welcome such talented and dedicated students and look forward to continuing the internship program. Dr. Provenzano often says one of the most rewarding aspects of his career is imparting his interest of scientific research into the lives of the next generation of medical professionals.

During his undergraduate years, Dr. Provenzano did research in Pittsburgh, PA which catalyzed his appreciation for furthering our collective understanding of medical knowledge. As he continued his research endeavors through medical school, residency, fellowship, and in private practice, Dr. Provenzano felt inspired to share this opportunity with ambitious students. He is proud of the accomplishments of his mentees and looks forward to meeting countless new students in years to come.

Industry Funded Research

The research department at Pain Diagnostics and Interventional Care has flourished since its inception in 2017. With the help of our fantastic patients, we have been fortunate enough to take part in furthering the understanding and efficacy of complex treatment options such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA). As a private practice in a region dominated by large healthcare systems, we are incredibly proud of our ability to contribute greatly to the field of Pain Management. We are honored to state that our research department contributes more to the field of Pain Management than any other healthcare system in our region. For the betterment of the lives of our patients, and the lives of others who may walk through the door of another practice, we are invariably on a mission to provide those in chronic pain with effective and research-driven solutions.

Prospective Clinical Trial of Duty-Cycled Stimulation using the Senza Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) System

Nevro researchers are conducting this study to evaluate a type of stimulation programming called “Duty Cycling” in patients with an existing Nevro SenzaTM Spinal Cord Stimulation system. In Duty Cycling, the stimulation is cycled between brief states of ‘ON’ and ‘OFF’, which allows for a reduction in battery recharging time. Researchers are aiming to determine if Duty Cycling can reduce the amount of recharging time while continuing to deliver safe and effective pain relief.
